Oganesson Element Properties and Information

Oganesson is 118th element on the periodic table. Elements are arranged in the periodic table on the basis of the atomic number. Atomic number is the number of protons in the nucleus of the atom. Oganesson has an atomic number of 118. It is located in the Group 18 and Period 7 of the periodic table of elements and denoted by the symbol ‘Og’. Oganesson is named after Yuri Oganessian for his contribution to transactinide element research.

A team led by Yuri Oganessian, which consisted of scientists from the Joint Institute of Nuclear Research (JINR) and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL); detected element-118 in the year 2002, although they didn’t announce their discovery till 20005 because the decay energy of the oganesson-294 was same as that of the polonium-212m. They confirmed their findings by noticing that californium bombarded with calcium yields oganesson.

Oganesson does not occur naturally in Earth’s crust; it can only be prepared in a synthetic manner in particle accelerators. It cannot even be prepared in a nuclear reactor. All the isotopes of oganesson which have been characterized so far have been obtained synthetically.

Physical Properties

  • Oganesson is a synthetic radioactive element and the last period-7 member on the periodic table of elements.
  • The atomic mass of oganesson is unknown as of yet.
  • The melting point of oganesson is unknown as of yet.
  • The boiling point of oganesson is unknown as of yet.
  • The density of oganesson is unknown as of yet.
  • Apart from nuclear properties, no physical properties of oganesson have been studied so far owing to short half-lives of all its isotopes and also the expensive production.
  • Oganesson belongs to the group-18, whose elements are noble-gases. All the group-18 elements are quite inert to most of the chemical reactions but oganesson is an exception. It is predicted to be quite reactive.
  • Oganesson is predicted to be a solid under normal conditions unlike other group-18 elements which are gaseous under normal conditions.
  • Oganesson-294 is the only confirmed isotope of oganesson as of yet.

Chemical Properties

  • Oganesson-294 has too short of a half-life to be investigated experimentally for chemical properties.
  • No oganesson compound has been synthesized yet.
  • Oganesson compounds have been predicted to have the most common oxidation state of ‘0’.

Methods of Production

Particle Accelerators: All the elements which have atomic number greater than 100 can only be prepared through reactions in a particle accelerator such as a cyclotron; they are not formed in a nuclear reactor. Californium-249 bombarded with calcium-48 yields oganesson-294.

Relevance in Chemical & Related Industries

Oganesson has no relevant use in chemical & related industries.

Relevance in Other Industries

Research: Oganesson has relevance only in the field of research.

Health Effects on Exposure

Oganesson doesn’t occur naturally hence there is no reason to study its effects on health.

Effects on Surroundings

Oganesson does not occur in Earth’s crust hence there is no reason to study its effects on environment.
